Popular and essential vitamins like vitamins B12, C and E, may hold the award for being ‘Most Familiar’ with many of us, but they are about to share their celebrity position with another crucial vitamin. Vitamin D3.
Vitamin D3 has been overlooked for too long but, we are happy to say it is finally receiving the serious attention it deserves.
Vitamin D3 is known as ‘The Sunshine Vitamin’, and is crucial for everyone’s all-round well being, helping in several essential functions from bone strength to calcium absorption, boosting immunity and cancer prevention.
WHY IS IT CALLED THE SUNSHINE VITAMIN
It’s called the sunshine vitamin because when exposed to the sun, our bodies produce vitamin D3. It is an unfortunate truth that these days many of us are Vitamin D deficient because of our mostly “indoor” lifestyle, (and our awareness of the risks of skin cancer from too much sun exposure, and subsequent use of sunscreens), which can lead to a host of health complications.
Vegans tend to be consistently low in D3, as it is almost impossible for them to come close to adequate supplementation from their diet. D3 rich foods are fatty fish, eggs, yogurt and milk, and fortified foods and cereals. But the levels of D vitamins found in food are inadequate for optimal health.
Undoubtedly the role Vitamin D3 plays in promoting and maintaining healthy bones is known to you, but are you also aware that vitamin D3 is crucial for:
Developing healthy immune and cardiovascular systems
It is essential for the proper functioning of the pancreas, muscles, brain, and the control of cell cycles
It aids in boosting weight loss
Offers protection from certain cancers and type 1 diabetes
“Activated vitamin D is one of the most potent inhibitors of cancer cell growth. You can reduce your risk of developing colon, breast, and esophageal cancers by 30 to 50% just by getting enough vitamin D.”
Head of the Vitamin D, Skin, and Bone Research Laboratory and the World's Top Vitamin D Researcher, Dr. Michael F. Holick
Recently, there is escalating evidence linking low levels of D3 to increased risks of bone and muscle pain, type 1 diabetes, and cancers of the colon, breast, ovaries, prostate, esophagus, and lymphatic system.
Research into D3 is intensifying, and as it does so, doctors are praising its properties as one of the best cancer-cell-growth inhibitors.
As the head of The Vitamin D, Skin, and Bone Research Laboratory, and the world’s top vitamin D researcher, Dr. Michael F. Holick said “Activated vitamin D is one of the most potent inhibitors of cancer cell growth. You can reduce your risk of developing colon, breast, and esophageal cancers by 30 to 50% just by getting enough vitamin D”. It also stimulates your pancreas to make insulin and activates and regulates your immune system so you can better fight infections.
IMPORTANCE FOR WOMEN:
Crucial to the preservation of bone-health all through one’s life, adequate levels of D3 must be reached. Women especially, who are deficient lose as much as 3-4% of their bone mass per year. Often women suffering from skeletal and muscle aches and pains are misdiagnosed as suffering from fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue, when in fact they are chronically D3 deficient.
In studies done at Harvard University, women who had a high intake of vitamin D3 decreased their chances of multiple sclerosis by 40%and rheumatoid arthritis by up to 44%, and significantly reduced the risk of breast cancer by practically 50% .
Very few women over the age of 50 (less than 10%) get adequate amounts of vitamin D3 from their diet, says Holick. You can boost your levels through sunlight exposure, but as we age, our body’s natural abilities to process sunlight into vitamin D3 declines. He highly recommends supplementation.
"If you have a Vitamin D deficiency, particularly in your older years, it can lead to osteoporosis or osteomalacia [bone softening]"
Lona Sandon, RD, Assistant Professor of Clinical Nutrition at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas.
A blood pressure study done at Boston University exposed people with high blood pressure, to high vitamin D levels in the form of UVA and UVB rays for three months. At the end of this time, their vitamin D levels elevated by more than one hundred percent and their blood pressure normalized. They were followed for nine months, and their hypertension stayed in remission.
Professor of medicine, physiology, and biophysics at Boston University, Dr. Holick, speculates that vitamin D causes a decrease in the manufacturing of a hormone called renin, which is thought to be a factor in hypertension.
According to NIH, The National Cancer Institute, there is experimental evidence that suggests a possible link between vitamin D and cancer risk. In studies of cancer cells and tumors in laboratory mice, vitamin D was found to have several actions that slowed or prevented the development of cancer, including promoting cellular differentiation, diminishing cancer cell growth, stimulating cell die-off (apoptosis), and reducing the formation of tumor blood vessels (angiogenesis).
The Journal of the American Medical Association in December 2003, published a study where more than 3,000 veterans between the ages of 50 and 75, at various veterans medical centers, were tested, and it was found that those who had vitamin D intake of over 650 IU daily along with daily dietary fiber had a reduction of 40% in their risk of possible precancerous colon polyp development.
The Journal of the American Geriatrics Society reported that a study done at the University of Basel in Switzerland had discovered that older women could reduce their risk of falling by 49% by taking vitamin D supplements plus calcium. They were compared to those taking calcium alone. Patients who had a history of falling seemed to benefit the most from vitamin D3 supplementation in this study.
BENEFITS OF VITAMIN D3:
Vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium from food and facilitates the re-absorption of this mineral by the kidneys. Vitamin D, along with calcium, promotes the absorption of phosphorus from your food. Both phosphorus and calcium are vital for maintaining bone health. Maintaining bone density requires calcium and prevents diseases, like osteo malacia and rickets.
Vitamin D is widely known as an immune system strengthener. Several studies have shown that it enhances immune system functions and may even prevent the development of autoimmune disease disorders. It is also an anti-inflammatory and helps to treat inflammatory disease as well.
Vitamin D3 is essential for an optimally functioning neuromuscular system (the nerve and muscular systems, which work together to allow the body to move). Low levels of D3 cannot protect against muscle weakness and degeneration.
Multiple studies have pointed to the connection between low levels of vitamin D3 and depression in both men and women. Perhaps even more compelling than that though is the outstanding collection of personal experiences that have shown that taking D3 along with vitamin K2 and Magnesium have changed people’s lives by substantially decreasing the symptoms and in some cases even curing their depression.
Vitamin D3 is proven to be an excellent cancer cell growth inhibitor. D3 deficiency has clear indications to be a risk factor in the development of multiple forms of cancer. Considerable data suggest maintaining high levels of vitamin D can aid in the prevention and the progression of cancer and increase survival rates.
Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, D3 helps to control inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis, helps in wound healing, and reduces itching, and may even help ease skin lesions brought on by conditions, like lichen planus (an inflammatory condition that affects the skin) and photo-dermatitis.
Vitamin D3 helps in the proper assimilation of food and regulates blood sugar levels, which combined with regular exercise and healthy eating habits, may aid in reaching any weight-loss goals. However, it must be used in combination with necessary lifestyle changes as it will not work on its own.
If lowering your blood pressure, reducing your risks of diabetes and minimizing your chances of a heart attack, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancers are a priority for you, then absolutely, Vitamin D3 is crucial in your daily supplementation regime.
The obvious answer to managing your vitamin D3 levels is to supplement. It’s practically impossible to get adequate amounts from diet and sun alone.
Keep in mind that when balancing your D3 and calcium intake, vitamins K2, and magnesium absolutely MUST be considered. These four essential nutrients are intricately connected with one supporting the other.Lack of balance of these four nutrients is the primary reason that calcium supplements are now connected with a higher risk of heart attacks and even stroke and why some people have experienced vitamin D toxicity.
Some of the explanation for these adverse side-effects is that vitamin K2 keeps calcium inits correct place. If you happen to be K2 deficient, extra calcium can cause more issues than it helps, by concentrating in the wrong places, like your soft tissue.
In a similar fashion, when taking vitamin D, you will need to take supplemental vitamin K2 and more magnesium. Taking large doses of vitamin D supplements without adequate supplies of K2 and magnesium can result in vitamin D toxicity and magnesium deficiency symptoms, which include inappropriate calcification that may have adverse effects on your heart.
In a study shared by Ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, it was shown that the maintenance dose of 2,000 IU daily, was not adequate to keep patient’s D3 levels from reverting back to deficiency and insufficiency status. Therefore a higher maintenance dose was recommended. Toxicity symptoms are virtually unknown below a daily dosages of 30,000 IU per day.
The US Institute of Medicine recommends a dosage of up to 4,000 IU per day as an undeniably safe amount. They set the limit lower to ensure that even in the event of user error(accidentally taking more than the daily dose) there would still be no serious side effects, but the reality is that you can take from 5,000 to 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 per day safely and with no ill effects.

Vitamin D is a major factor in overall health and is now recognized to be more than just a vitamin responsible for calcium homeostasis in the body, but acts as a steroid hormone precursor that is essential to proper endocrine and immune system health. Recent research suggests that nearly every cell in our body has Vitamin D receptors. Unfortunately Vitamin D3, the most bioavailable form of Vitamin D, is only produced by exposure to sunlight and is not found in adequate levels in any food sources.
Vitamin D3 is essential to the immune system and calcium absorption. Vitamin K2 is crucial for proper function of Vitamin D3 and vital to heart health due to its role in keeping calcium out of the arteries and bringing it into the bones and teeth. Mk-7 (menaquinone-7) is the most bioavailable and effective form of K2.
This perfectly balanced dose of Vitamin D3, Vitamin K2, and Magnesium comes in an easily applied slow-release patch. Our innovative and convenient delivery method gives you bioavailable D3, K2, and Magnesium through direct slow absorption into the skin, closely resembling the body’s natural production of D3 through sunlight exposure.
"I would like to let you know that your vitamin D patch is the first time in 20 years that I was able to get my vitamin D levels to raise up and I am grateful for that I can't thank you guys enough for making such superior products in your transdermal patches"
"My chiropractor gave me a pack of D3 patches from you guys and it changed everything for me! I had no idea how bad my SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) was until I used the patches. I'm blown away by how much better I feel."
"I just wanted to tell you guys I tried your b12 and vitamin D patches out of pure frustration of my health issues of which there is not enough room here to list but one thing that I never expected those patches to effect was my fertility! I had accepted that after 14 years, which is how old or youngest are our twins, that I must not be fertile anymore and even though we still actively tried thru the years and low and behold the moment I put these patches on I felt a huge rush of energy but it was weird the first time was the strongest and not the same after that but I still kept using them...
Well that very next female cycle I had was wayyyyy different than any before and I thought maybe something was wrong but it tapered and then an amazing thing happened!!!... I ovulated!! Yeas I actually felt my body ovulate and we had just did the deed! I ended up conceiving two days before my Birthday and we are now proudly almost 18 weeks pregnant! We will send you guys at Raw Food World a picture of our baby once he or she is born! Much Love and Gratitude... "
